Russian military plane is accidentally shot down by Assad forces, killing all 15 on board
A Russian military plane was accidentally shot down by Assad's forces last night, Moscow has admitted as it blamed Israeli jets for pushing the aircraft into the line of fire of Syrian missiles.

The Il-20, a turbo-prop plane used for electronic reconnaissance, was brought down as it came into land at Russia's Hmeymim air base near Latakia in western Syria, killing all 15 on board.

This morning, Russia's Defense Ministry said it held Israel responsible because, at the time of the incident, Israeli fighter jets were mounting air attacks on Syria targets and had only given Moscow one minute's warning.

The ministry said this was not enough time for the Russian plane to get to safety and has now threatened retaliation as it accused Israel of a hostile provocation.

'As a result of the irresponsible actions of the Israeli military, 15 Russian service personnel perished. This absolutely does not correspond to the spirit of Russian-Israeli partnership,' Interfax news agency quoted Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov as saying.

'We reserve the right to take commensurate measures in response,' Konashenkov was quoted as saying.
